Not everyone vectors(Cheat Illustrate) the same way. However, I am happy to know that my tutorial, written when I was 15 has actually helped thousands of people. YAY! Anyways here's an ultimate vector tutorial, now that it has been 7 years later. I am proud to be one of the pioneers. I own jadersworld.com and I had my older tutorial there.

NOW FOR THE GOOD STUFF...

I am using this photo:

One main thing about chosing a photo is:

Making sure you like it because Vectoring does take patience, especially if you are looking for a certain style.

I chose this image because of the colors and I really like the flower, well and I guess because it's me, the designer.

Requirements:
Adobe PhotoShop 5.5+ (any version with the tools), I am using Adobe Photoshop CS2
Patience - about 1/2 hour for beginners.
Accurate Mouse
An "Eye" for artistic detailing

  • You don't need to know much about Adobe Photoshop but it helps if you do.
  • You may use the image I have here for the tutorial but if you use any of my work please link back to me. Unfortunately you can't right click to retrieve images on this page so if you have to download the image just click on it. Use any image that is large enough for you to get the details you want - according to the image you can also resize it and fill your own details... like in this example - since i cant see everything.
  • Start by opening the image. If you are using this one, resize to a larger image on a larger resolution, simply because the image quality doesn't matter since it's there only for your stencil. If you at a higher resolution just make it fit your screen or until you see the image large enough to do detailing.

Create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N on Windows, CMD+ SHIFT+ N on Macs) by going to Layer New or clicking the create a new layer icon.

You may want to rename the layer so you don't get confused.

I called mine "Base Colors."

For this tutorial we will NOT be using the polygon lasso tool like my early years. At that time, I didn't know how to use the PEN TOOL.

So, I apologize for anyone who had to go through the torture of the Polygon, and gosh if you want to illustrate, please invest in a WACOM Tablet, it's useful! However, this tutorial does not require a Wacom tablet but it sure makes your life easier.

This is the pen tool, embrace it, do not be afraid of it at all!

Remember that it is your friend and it will help you throughout your Photoshop encounters from this time forth.
